Understanding Torsion Spring Model Codes

Example: .207-2-5-8-RH

  • .207 = Wire diameter (0.207 inches)
  • 2-5-8 = Inside diameter (2-5/8" or 2.625")
  • RH = Right-hand wind direction

Common Inside Diameter Codes:

  • 1-3-4 or 134 = 1.75"
  • 2 = 2.0"
  • 2-1-4 = 2.25"
  • 2-5-8 or 258 = 2.625"
  • 3-3-4 or 334 = 3.75"

Wire diameter in inches (e.g., 0.207, 0.250)
Inside diameter in inches (e.g., 1.75, 2.0, 2.25)
Length of the wound portion in inches
Direction the spring winds when loaded

How to Measure Your Torsion Spring

Key Measurements
  • Wire Diameter (d): Thickness of the wire, measured with calipers
  • Inside Diameter (ID): Inner diameter of the coil
  • Outside Diameter (OD): Outer diameter of the coil = ID + (2 × wire diameter)
  • Body Length (L): Length of the wound coil section only
  • Wind Direction: Right-hand (RH) or Left-hand (LH) when looking at the spring from the stationary cone
Important Notes
  • Always replace both springs at the same time
  • Ensure wind direction matches your setup
  • Consider safety cables for overhead doors
  • Professional installation recommended
  • Springs are under extreme tension - handle with care
